There is no better Valentine than you. While you are in the shower, give yourself the gift of love and do a self breast exam. It doesn't take much time at all. It can save your life. Mammograms are not suggested until the age of 40 (I disagree), but you can do self exams on your own. Especially if there is someone in your family who has had Breast Cancer, I strongly recommend or if you are someone who tends to have cystic breast.
Because most young women do not get mammograms, breast cancer is most often first detected when a woman notices a lump or change in the look or feel of her breast, nipple or underarm area.
According to the Susan G Koman website; after menopause, white women have higher rates of breast cancer than African American women. However, before menopause, African American women have higher rates of breast cancer. This may be due, in part, to differences in some reproductive factors that increase breast cancer risk. For example, African American women tend to start their periods at younger ages than white women.
The biology of breast tumors in younger African American women may also be different from the biology of breast tumors in other women. For example, younger African American women are more likely than older African American women or women of other ethnicity's to be diagnosed with triple negative breast cancers. The reasons behind these differences are under study. If you are uncertain about how to check your breast, the next time you are at the GYN ask them to show you how.
