October is breast cancer awareness month and there are 5 sure ways you can help combat this disease.
Know Your Body
Breast cancer is not just a woman’s disease, there are almost 2000 men diagnosed every year. Ensure that you do self-exams and check your breast. If you are unsure about how to give yourself an exam, you can ask your general physician. More and more people are self-diagnosing themselves. A good practice is to check your breast every 3 months in the shower. There are plenty of diagrams on credible sites like the American Cancer Society.
Eating healthy is important to living well. Putting the right fruits and vegetables in your body can aid in your journey to a healthy lifestyle. There are plenty of cancer-fighting fruits, vegetables, and herbs, that can assist with killing cancer cells. Before changing your diet, it is important to speak with your doctor, and perhaps speak with a nutritionist to guide you on how to eat healthy for your body type, any pre-dispositions, or current health conditions you may be experiencing.
According to medical studies, obesity is a factor of Breast Cancer. Exercise for some of us may be difficult to maintain. Some of us are looking for immediate weight loss results. The truth is everything that is successful, takes consistency. It is important that you are consistent in your exercise regimen and set realistic exercise goals for yourself, and start off slow. If you live in an urban city, you can start by getting off one train stop before or after your stop and walk. Or if you live in an area where you drive everywhere, try not to park close to the entrance, park a little further away and walk the extra steps. If you work in an office building, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Every step counts towards your fitness and weight loss goals.
Spread The Word
Participate in Breast Cancer awareness activities all year round; not just in October. Make sure when you do participate in activities to post pictures to your social media accounts, let your friends and family know what you are doing and ask them to join you. Even if you do not personally know anyone that has been diagnosed, let’s keep it that way by encouraging self-exams and awareness.
Support and Give to charities that support Breast Cancer initiatives.
There are several non-profit organizations that support various breast cancer initiatives. Find an organization that you would like to support and aligns with your beliefs. Always ask your doctor before engaging in a new eating or exercise plan. According to the Susan G. Breast Cancer is diagnosed every day, so it is our job to make people aware every day, not just October.
